We Care About Aftercare
Proper aftercare is critical to optimize the healing and aesthetic outcome of a new tattoo. Following proper aftercare instructions helps prevent infection and promotes proper healing. Critical steps, delineated below, include gentle cleansing of the tattoo, applying recommended ointments/moisturizers as directed, and avoiding excessive sun and water exposure. These essential steps ensure the longevity and vibrant appearance of any tattoo.
Prioritizing Safety
Immediately after a tattoo is placed, pigments are dispersed throughout both the epidermis and dermis. After tattooing, wound healing begins immediately with an acute inflammatory response. This is followed by proliferation and maturation phases.
In the first several days of healing, the body expels as many of these foreign ink particles as possible through the epidermis; clients may observe pigments "leaking" out of their skin for several days.
In the first several weeks of healing, any remaining pigments within the epidermis and along the dermoepidermal junction are removed by desquamation (shedding of the epidermis), ultimately leaving only intradermal pigments. This pigment removal pathway is known as transepidermal elimination and is completed within one month of tattoo placement.
Aftercare Instructions
Leave the bandage or covering on the tattoo overnight
Remove the bandage/covering the following morning and CLEAN your tattoo thoroughly with soap and water.
Rather than simply allowing water and soap to run over the tattoo, rub any serum/plasma off of the tattoo. This allows the tattooed skin to "breathe" and helps prevent infection. Preferably, one should use an antibacterial soap.
Avoid any clothing rubbing over the tattoo as much as possible during the first several days of the healing process
Change or wash bedding and towels daily to avoid inadvertent bacterial exposure
For the first 2-3 days after tattoo placement, apply Bactine and Aquaphor as follows:
After your tattoo has been cleaned, apply a thin layer of BACTINE over your tattoo.
Once the Bactine has dried, apply a thin layer of Aquaphor.
Repeat the process of cleaning, applying Bactine and then Aquaphor 2-3 times per day for the first 3 days.
Should any adverse events occur, immediately consult a board-certified dermatologist for further instruction
